大陆改革开放初期，优先发展的广东一带是内陆许多省市年轻人眼中的天堂，北方某省名叫赵家坳的小山村就有赵小云、志强等六名青年男女怀着梦想来到广东，他们希望通过打工改变自己的命运。其时纺织、玩具制造等产业是广东的发展支柱，心细手快的打工妹远比笨手拙脚的打工仔吃香，赵小云等几个姑娘很快进入某厂成为“外来妹”，志强等几个男孩则被拒之门外。
外面的世界很精彩，外面的世界很无奈。漫漫打工路令几个情如姐妹的姑娘做出不同的人生抉择：有的经不起金钱考验，走上不归路；有的与当地人结婚，留在了广东；有的感慨金窝银窝好不过自己的狗窝，又回赵家坳……其中故事最为精彩的，当属赵小云：事业上经过波折有很大成就令人感叹，她与香港老板的情感纠葛亦扣人心弦。。A pilots pregnant wife is killed by a band of thugs who break into their home.
