一说到菠菜，很多人的第一反应就是大力水手。因为这位叼着烟斗的水手，菠菜的知名度和销售量大大提升。诞生于1929年的大力水手波普，最早见于美国《Thimble Theatre》连环漫画上，波普的生父是来自美国伊利诺伊州彻斯特镇的连环漫画家埃尔兹•西格。波普和他可爱的女友奥利弗在现实生活中都确有其人，而他们就住在彻斯特镇，因此他们的形象才会真实地受人欢迎。大力水手的风靡成了一种风潮，当地菜农广种菠菜，2004年纽约大厦为了纪念其诞生75年，通体变成波普最爱吃的菠菜的颜色。
