本片根据同名京剧改编，源出「水浒传」，胡金铨编剧。值得一提的是，擅演悲剧的乐蒂首次以俏皮方式演出丫头一角。故事始于才子卞济（乔庄）落拓花田，卖画维生，与官家小姐（丁宁）一见锺情，却因恶霸（朱牧）介入而波折重重，闹出连篇笑话……。Steven Parnell, who was accused of murdering a number young girls the previous summer, is killed while in prison awaiting trial. Morse had not been involved in the case as he was on leave during most of that investigation.
