古老的北京城，中年男子孙子旺（梁冠华 饰）和妻子杨喜莲（杨瑞霞 饰）过着平凡的生活。一封当年插队恋人秀儿的来信，将孙子旺夫妇本就危机重重的婚姻彻底摧毁。原来信中秀儿提及曾生养一对龙凤双胞胎，因无力抚养和社会的压力而将孩子送人。肩负秀儿的嘱托，孙踏上了寻找孩子的旅途，几经辗转却得知孩子们早就被人领养送到了美国。
