一个大雨之夜，在金泽市第三码头有一辆汽车没有刹车直接冲进了大海里，白川球磨子（沢口靖子 饰）由于会游泳而摆脱是死神游上岸来，不会游泳的丈夫、金泽料理店金城楼的老板福太郎（小林稔侍 饰）随车一起葬身大海。由于北陆日日新闻记者容子（室井滋 饰）撰写一连串负面报道，更称球磨子为“鬼磨球”，留给大众以及警察恶劣的印象，更因为这些报道，让警察在没有十足证据的情况下逮捕了球磨子。
律师原山（津川雅彦 饰）找来朋友律师佐原（田村正和 饰）共同研究这个案子，佐原拒绝了。一审判决后球磨子被判死刑，她写了一封诚恳的信向佐原求助，这封信与球磨子一向咄咄逼人的态度有所不同，打动佐原成为她的辩护律师。自此佐原开始调查球磨子的一生，以及与丈夫福太郎的关系，为她翻案……。A group of students who are participating in a university's summer science camp are drawn into an incredible quagmire of conflicts, ranging from the relatively simple conflict between an engaging and forthright young teacher and his older manipulative colleague, to a contest pitting political correctness against free scientific inquiry. Despite the murkiness of some of the issues in the latter conflict, the students pitch in enthusiastically on what they believe to be the side of righteousness, and passions rise to fever pitch.
